National Training Modules

The following pages list the modules in the National Fire Agencies Modular Training System. The national modules can be used in two ways:

  1. An agency (such as the NSW Rural Fire Service) can select particular modules to make up an internal credential. For example, Modules 1.12A, 1.12B, 1.16,1.19 and 1.22 cover the same subject matter as in our existing NSW Basic Modules. So it would be possible for the NSW Rural Fire Service to use various combinations of national modules as an alternative or substitute "learning pathway" for persons wanting to become a Basic Bush Firefighter or obtain some other internal credential.

  2. An individual can undertake training with a "recognised provider of national training" and when they've completed sufficient modules can obtain a formal qualification, such as a certificate or diploma. The national modules are listed according to which qualification they apply. If you want to get such a qualification you need to complete all the listed "generic" modules for that level, plus enough of the "elective modules" to make up the number indicated near the top of each column.
The NSW Rural Fire Service is a "recognised provider" in NSW, so it can issue these national qualifications.

Generally speaking, the number of modules needed for a person to be an effective volunteer firefighter are considerably less than those needed for a national certificate or diploma. However, when you get to Fire Control Officer level, or thereabouts, the number needed to carry out their job and the credential requirements are very similar.
